On Friday 21s.t April
5 Venture Scoust – Conor Nevin-Maguire, Aaron Power, Ian Grant,
Jessica Collins and Niamh Byrne – and Venture Leader Brian
Fanning took part in Grade 2 Canoeing Course through the 180 Kayak
Club.
On Friday in Clashnacanny, in County Kilkenny we got suited up and
onto the water. We were shown a few canoeing strokes by our instructors
Philip and Patrick McCormack. We paddled around the Lough for awhile
before we headed a small bit down river over two weirs. As you can
see from the photos we played around on the weirs for a while. At
8.00pm we finished our 1st day of paddling.
We setup camp at the side of the river, played football for a while
and then went to Graiguenamanagh for some food, then did the usual;
sat around campfire, gazed at the stars, had a chat and laugh and
the went to bed at 1ish.
Up then the next morning 9am-ish, went and got breakfast and back
on the river for 11.00am. Did a bit more practice and a few new
strokes and then we set off on our journey to St. Mullins approx.
11km's away. The day was fine and the river calm (until you come
to rapids and weirs that is). At some stage of the day we all managed
to capsize some even two and three times.

After a long paddle down river we eventually arrived at our destination,
St Mullins, at 3.30pm where we got changed and headed home.
On behalf of the Waterford Scout County Venture Group we would like
to thank Philip and Patrick of the 180 Kayak Club for a brilliant
and aching weekend which we all enjoyed.
